Simtejo R&D project receives world prize for innovation
The Aquasafe real-time information management system, developed by Simtejo in partnership with the Portuguese company Hidromod as part of a research project, has received another international award.
After receiving an award in May from the International Water Association (IWA), one of the world’s most prestigious water sector associations, in the regional competition for Europe and West Asian of the Project Innovation Awards (PIA), the importance of the Aquasafe platform has again been recognised with the presentation of a Global Honour Award in the grand world final of the competition, which took place on Wednesday, September 19 at the IWA World Water Congress in South Korea.
The Honour Award in the Operations and Management category was for the contribution of the Aquasafe platform to improving the efficiency of operational management through the monitoring of real-time information (automation systems, flow measurements and udometer and quality-monitoring networks) and its integration with forecasting and diagnostics tools (meteorological forecasting models, mathematical models of the drainage systems and a hydrodynamic model of the Tagus estuary).
Earlier, at the end of 2011, the implementation of the AQUASAFE platform at the Beirolas subsystem, which is also managed by Simtejo, gained international recognition when its was considered one of the most important projects of the year by the judges of the Be Inspired Bentley Awards.
The AQUASAFE platform enables, for example, the forecasting of overflow events caused by heavy rainfall; the planning of maintenance operations, taking into account tides and weather forecasts; the forecasting of inflows into wastewater treatment plants with a view to improving their functioning; and the production of reports and control-room presentations of varied geographical data, the integration of which generates information specifically applicable to the plant’s functioning.
Other AdP Group companies are also applying the AQUASAFE platform in their operations, with Águas do Noroeste using it to support Water Security Plans and Águas do Oeste to help improve controls of drinking water quality. AQUASAFE is also being used by companies outside the AdP Group, such as the ports of Leixões and Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal, Energias de Portugal’s thermo-electrical power plant at Sines and a pilot project at the Brazilian company SABESP.
The PIA Awards, which have been running since 2006 and are divided into regional competitions, are awarded in international recognition of excellence and innovation in engineering projects related to the water sector. The awards are also aimed at encouraging exchanges among professionals in the sector with a view to disseminating best practices in the areas of sustainability and efficient water management.
