Participation in High Level UN Dialogue on Energy

In September 2021, a High Level Dialogue on Energy is to take place at the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations. Within the scope of preparations, the Ministerial Thematic Forums took place between 21 and 25 June to bring together the interested parties.

Portugal took a position as a "Global Champion of Energy", co-organising one of the Ministerial Forums in preparation for the High Level Dialogue. João Oliveira Miguel, Director of AdP VALOR, presented the ZERO Program to the panel “Enhancing Prosperity: Accelerating SDG7 Achievements in Support of Just, Inclusive Societies", thus setting out the Group’s ambition to achieve energy neutrality in 2030 and thereby contributing to the decarbonisation of the water sector in Portugal and promoting the circular economy.

Within the framework of preparations for the High Level Dialogue on Energy taking place at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2021, which seeks to bring about the implementation of the Agenda 2030 goals and objectives related to energy and accelerate compliance with the energy targets in SDG7, thematic ministerial forums were held in the month of June.

The Águas de Portugal Group was invited to participate in a session on “Global Multi-stakeholder Dialogue” within the framework of the thematic ministerial forum on “Enabling the SDGs through inclusive, just energy transitions”, a theme on which Portugal took up a position as a “Global Champion” and co-organised with its peer champion partners (Iceland, Honduras, Nauru, Panama, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Union) and with the Secretary of the United Nations. In this session, there were presentations of examples of successful circular economy projects that enable the acceleration of the transition to the production and consumption of renewable energy.

João Oliveira Miguel, Director of AdP VALOR, presented the work being undertaken by the Águas de Portugal Group within the scope of the water-energy nexus and the underlying strategy to ZERO – the Energy Neutrality Program according to which the Group shall attain energy self-sufficiency via 100% renewable sources by 2030 through leveraging the close interconnection between the production of green energy via endogenous resources and nurturing the circular economy.
