Águas de Portugal Group in the spotlight at the UN

The AdP Group was an invited participant at an event organised by the European Union Delegation, the Permanent Missions of Portugal, Mozambique and Antigua and Barbuda in conjunction with the United Nations and the Alliance of Small Island States, held on 17 June on the theme “Accelerating Adaptation in the Decade of Action for SDGs - Scaling up Planning and Mobilizing Finance for Adaptation Actions” and which saw the presentation of examples of strategies adopted for coping with climate changes.

On this occasion, Cláudio de Jesus, the AdP Internacional President, presented two examples of projects carried out in developing countries with a particular focus on the AdP Group mission in Mozambique in 2019 (the Humanitarian Aid Project - Response to the Calamities Caused by Cyclones Idaí and Kenneth, Mozambique, 2019), which involved the deployment of 19 Águas de Portugal Group experts who worked in close coordination with the Mozambique government and the local authorities in the zones most affected to develop a set of support actions spanning the following three axes:
- Assessment of the needs for rebuilding water supply systems in affected areas;
- Support for the restoration of water supply systems (mainly in Beira);
- Supply of reagents for water disinfection

Also under focus was the assistance work provided to the government of East Timor in drafting the Directive Plan for the Drainage and Sanitation of Díli in 2017, which endowed the national authorities with a planning instrument taking into consideration responses to extreme climate events that are proving ever more frequent in this country.
