Boosting the intelligence of electricity grids


Portugal is coordinating a project designed to boost the intelligence of electricity grids in three European countries: Portugal, Sweden and Slovenia.

The InteGrid project, running under the auspices of the European Union H2020 research and innovation program, seeks to demonstrate innovative solutions for intelligent electricity grids across three pillars: flexibility in electricity consumption for domestic and industrial consumers, energy storage systems and forecasting the production of renewable energies and consumption.

Involving over 50 people, belonging to 14 institutions in eight different European countries, the InteGrid project has a budget of €15 million, with €11.3 million financed by the European Commission, and plans to set up five intelligent electricity grids, with three located in Portugal.
The three demonstration poles in Portugal are located in the Alentejo, Lisbon and the Oeste region, thus integrating both residential and industrial consumers and, in the specific case of domestic consumption, developing technology to enable consumers to intelligently managed their own electricity consumption.

The other two intelligent electricity grid demonstration projects are located in Stockholm, Sweden (covering residential consumers) and in Ljubljana, Slovenia (covering domestic and office consumers).

InteGrid is coordinated by EDP Distribuição and in Portugal, draws upon the participation of Águas de Portugal, of INESC TEC and New R&D – Centre for New Energy Technologies.

The other European partners are: the Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH and cyberGRID GmbH & Co. (Austria), Elektro Ljubljana (Slovenia), GE Grid Solutions (United Kingdom), DNV GL Netherlands (Netherlands), KTH – Royal Institute of Technology, SIMAM – LocalLife and ELLEVIO (Sweden), IIT Institute for Research in Technology, Comillas University (Spain) and SAP SE (Germany).
