Water route of the Algarve


The Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and the Secretary of State for the Environment participated today on a new route dedicated to water in the Algarve, promoted by Águas do Algarve, manager of the Multi-municipal Water Supply and Sanitation System of the Algarve, which features some of the projects designed to bring about a deepening of the resilience of the water supply and wastewater treatment services in the region.

The route begins alongside the Odeleite dam in Castro Marim, which presents the project to take advantage of the spare volume in this reservoir that seeks to provide an approximately 25% addition to the flows necessary to ensure for consumption and involving investment in the region of 1.5 million euros.
 
Also in Castro Marim, there shall be the presentation of the project on the “Infrastructures for Lifting and Supplying of ApR – Water for Reutilisation from the Vila Real de Santo António wastewater treatment plant – Phase I”, designed to enable the application of treated wastewaters to irrigating the golf courses existing in the northern area of this council, thus striving to contribute to ensuring a balance between demand and the shortage of water and furthermore strengthening resilience against drought taking into account the scenarios for climate change.

The route also includes the inauguration of two wastewater lifting stations at Ferragial in Faro and at Mercado in Olhão -, infrastructures integrated into the Multi-municipal Sanitation System of the Algarve, specifically the sub-systems that lead into the new Faro-Olhão wastewater treatment plant.

The Algarve water route closes with the inauguration of the flotation building in the Alcantarilha water treatment plant in Silves that, when it enters into operation, shall ensure more robust water treatment for supplying the western Algarve region.
